Peter Gill was already firmly established as an outstanding, original theatre director when he and I found ourselves together on the BBC TV directors’ course in 1973.
For the internal production that ended the course, I arranged to pool my budget with Peter’s to enhance his opportunity, and produce it. We spent a whole weekend cutting Macbeth down to 40 minutes, casting Oliver Cotton in the lead role with Jane Lapotaire as his Lady Macbeth, and Stephen Rea playing all the other parts. It worked out well.
Peter had a gentle but critical attitude to life and the vital importance of cultural connection. He was also a delight to be with.
